LGBTQ+ GROUP

The LGBTQ+ Group at SpeakUpCIC began in 1993 at a time when there was far less equality and acceptance for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Whilst acknowledging the progress that has been made in legal equality, our community is still subject to hate crimes and SpeakUpCIC has long provided a safe space. Since its formation in recognition that a higher percentage of LGBTQ+ people experience mental health challenges, it has offered peer support through a monthly social group.

Over the years, we have also visited Brighton's Mind Out organisation and participated in many LGBTQ+ Prides.

We currently offer an online monthly Zoom group meeting in addition to our in-person social, both providing peer support, and new and returning members are warmly welcomed.

Pride 2024
SpeakUpCIC's LGBTQ+ Group has been running since 1993 and still offers a space space, both in-person and on Zoom, for members new and existing, not just in Thanet but, thanks to technology, across Kent. It offered peer support to members of the LGBTQ+ who faced mental health challenges and continues to do so, helping to overcome feelings of isolation.Since 2016, Margate Pride, in its present form, has been a highlight of the LGBTQ+ calendar in Thanet and SpeakUpCIC has always been a supporter, its LGBTQ+ Group and allies participating in the colourful annual march. 2024 was no exception, a group of members and friends of all sexualities taking part on Saturday, 10th August. To me, it's important that we still hold Pride events. In many places around the globe, there is the death penalty or imprisonment for being LGBTQ+, and even in the UK, there is a growing number of reported hate crimes against members of the LGBTQ+ community - we walk in solidarity with those affected. Thousands took part in the march and, this year, we walked from the Walpole Bay Lawns to Dreamland, where a rally and entertainment took place. The atmosphere was one of friendly exuberance, a sea of colour and rainbow flags, and it was great to march alongside so many other community groups. A treat awaited us at SpeakUpCIC after the match with a delicious tea prepared by Maggie and fellow volunteers and members. The Lifeboat Room, where our group's Pride event was held, was wonderfully decorated and a huge thank you to everyone who prepared such a fabulous Pride day party. Please contact Maggie or Ian if you would like to join the SpeakUpCIC LGBTQ+ Group, either in person or online.
